Gold is traded in several 'forms':
- As 'spot' (like currency instruments), under the symbol XAU/USD. The all-time-high price for this instrument was 1920.85 (http://www.investing.com/currencies/xau-usd-chart)
- As 'future', under the name Gold Futures (symbol: GCG5). The all-time-high price in this instrument's chart was 1911.60 (http://www.investing.com/commodities/gold-streaming-chart)
The difference in price stems from the fact that the Gold futures is a financial asset, whose price is derived from the underlying asset (the commodity gold), rather than be an exact match.
